SEO, AEO and GEO: what should a business prioritise?

Start with pages that search engines can discover and people can use. Give each important service a clear page, answer the questions buyers actually ask, show credible examples, and measure what is indexed and visited. AEO and GEO describe how that work may surface in answer and generative experiences; they do not replace foundational SEO.

What the three terms mean

SEO improves a site’s ability to be discovered, understood and useful in search. AEO focuses on clear answers to specific questions. GEO is commonly used for visibility in generative search responses. For a small business, these areas overlap: the same accurate service page can help a human visitor, a search result and a cited answer.

Google says its generative search features draw on core Search systems. Bing’s guidance likewise treats crawlability, clear structure and useful original content as foundations for visibility. Neither platform guarantees a ranking or citation.

Make the foundations inspectable

Give important topics their own useful URLs. Link them from navigation or related pages with descriptive labels. Keep canonical URLs and the sitemap accurate, and make the main content available in ordinary HTML. Check that indexing is permitted and that the mobile page is readable.

A sitemap is a discovery aid, not proof that a page is indexed. Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools can show the status of your own site once you verify ownership.

Answer questions with real evidence

Write the answer near the top, then provide the detail a buyer needs to decide. A studio service page can describe deliverables, what shapes a quote and the next step. A case study should name the brief, decisions and actual work shown. Original examples give a reader something more useful than a rewritten definition.

For DBS, a page about brand identity can point to SAKI packaging and Primerose menus. A page about search work can explain the scope of a search audit and the difference between technical improvements and content work. The two should not be sold as duplicate AEO and GEO charges.

Skip tactics that exist only for a crawler

Google says special AI text files, artificial content chunking and repeated keyword variants are not required for its generative features. Structured data can clarify an article or business, but it must match visible facts. It does not make a thin page useful.

Publish a smaller set of well-kept pages before scaling a blog. Review sources, update stale claims and remove material that no longer helps a reader.

Measure discovery before claiming visibility

After launch, check indexing and queries in Search Console. Bing Webmaster Tools also reports AI citation activity for supported experiences. Look at which pages earn relevant impressions, visits or citations, then improve the pages that do not answer the intent well.

These tools report different things. A successful crawl, a valid schema block and a good lab score are useful checks. None establishes that the page ranks or appears in an AI answer.

  • Verify the site in the relevant webmaster tools.
  • Submit the canonical sitemap after launch.
  • Review indexing and real search questions before planning the next article.
